Gerry Anderson

We know there are many folk out there who are fans of the Gerry Anderson shows, mainly of the 1960s but later as well.

There is a YouTube channel that is streaming many of them, and while we do have them all on dvd, sometimes it’s just nice to watch one at random.

Here’s the channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ShoutStudios

Others have been on, Thunderbirds, Supercar, Stingray and they seem to come and go.

“Thunderbirds Are Go”/”Thunderbird 6”

The 1960s was a high spot in British television. The Avengers, The Prisoner, Dr Who, The Saint, great drama and, of course, the series created by Gerry Anderson. Many, most of his at this time were marionettes: Fireball XL5, Supercar, Stingray and Captain Scarlet (kind of, no strings), but the best of all and most beloved was Thunderbirds.

The Tracy family live on, er Tracy Island. They spend their time saving people from dangerous situations, all the time maintaining their secrecy, except when they don’t. We never understood this – weren’t people in danger somewhere all the time, and what did the other rescue services ever do?

The series was good at the start but became dull and all Lady Penelope nonsense by the end. It only ran for 32 episodes, barely two series, but still gets big audiences if it is shown today.

Thunderbirds

I always loved the original Thunderbirds. It was great tv for its time. But, I have always had questions:

  • why were the launch procedures of the craft so complicated?
  • why did the Tracy brothers nearly always wear the same clothes?
  • what had John done that was so bad that he was almost always banished to the space station?
  • why did John wear his uniform at all times when he lived alone?
  • what did John do for fun?
  • how come no-one could detect T5 in orbit?
  • why weren’t IR working all the time? Surely people are in danger at all times, day and night?
  • although IR said no photographs, we have to be anonymous, plenty of people knew their names and their link to Lady Penelope…
  • how did the craft fly? When they were coming in to land, they seemed to hover with no engines burning. Then they fired downwards and this made them go downwards. Then they stopped firing jets, and settled gently to the ground, rather than falling like stones. How is this even possible?
  • why are T2’s wings on backwards?
  • how did The Hood get his name? Who does he work for?
