Five iconic London things we miss…

The Central Line

We used to live in South Woodford. It felt like not London, nearly the countryside.

We took the Central Line to work, and it was a journey, but the line goes much farther east than that.

Epping was definitely country, but you could get a shuttle way beyond that, all the way to Ongar.

It felt like the real country. It seemed almost walking distance to Chelmsford. You could not hear the cars or smell the fumes.

But it closed in 1994 and that bit of red disappeared.

You can, however, travel on it as a heritage railway, and you can see the nice stations. It’s great fun, as it always was.

We thought about including the Circle line, but that’s just too sad for words.
