Victoria

Things to do in the area

There are lots of interesting things in the Victoria area, but somehow it doesn’t quick click as a tourist area. Yes, Buckingham Palace is five minutes walk away, So is Westminster Cathedral. There used to be a very old cinema (the Biograph) but it has gone.

There are three theatres there, two showing Hamilton and Wicked, musicals you can see most anywhere.

There’s a fairly awful shopping centre just across the road, with restaurants and shops.

So here’s something you don’t see every day. Leave the front of the station and cross all the roads (take care, follow the lights) to go to the right of the Victoria Palace theatre (Hamilton) near Little Ben. Keep walking down Victoria Street until you reach Palace Street (just after the cathedral on the opposite side). Walk down Palace Street, cross it at some point, and look for Buckingham Place. You are looking for number 1, on the right.

Recognise it, especially the post box? It’s Number 6’s home from The Prisoner. In fact, in the programme titles he is gassed and, as he falls, we see buildings through the window. Last time we were there, no so long ago, those buildings were still there and were very recognisable.

The street sign has changed slightly and the door is a different colour, but not much else is different.
