Genital piercings

There is one further issue. It applies to the UK, and may apply elsewhere in some form.

Finding someone to do a female genital piercing has become harder. But not impossible.

It’s not because piercers don’t want to do it, or can’t do it, or haven’t in the past.

There is something called the Female Genital Mutilaton Act (2003), which makes FGM illegal and with a sentence of up to 14 years.

Depending on how you read it, it seems to allow that regular, professional piercers running a business, asked by a consenting adult customer for an intimate piercing, could be found guilty of FGM, sentenced and go to prison.

You can look up the act and the explanations that go with it, and they are somewhat vague. They use words like ‘an assault charge is unlikely to be appropriate’, ‘tending against a prosecution’ and ‘each case must be considered on its own facts’ and there is always room for doubt. It is not clear, and many piercers just won’t take that chance.
