Then came The Doughnut In Granny’s Greenhouse (1968). This had some chart success, partly because the Bonzos were appearing on the ITV comedy show Do Not Adjust Your Set with David Jason and future members of Monty Python.
They capitalised on this with Tadpoles (1969).
It was again a mixture of old jazz comedy and more surreal rock stuff, but there was a hit single, I’m The Urban Spaceman produced by Paul McCartney.
Then it all started to go wrong. Touring strains did not help. Keynsham is quite a funny album from 1969, but by now the members were moving on. A last album, Let’s Make Up And Be Friendly (1972), was more a contract completion effort. There are few group tracks, and it does mark the introduction on disc of Stanshall’s Rawlinson End work.
