So we get a 2026 remix by Giles Martin. He gets to do this because he is the son of George Martin, who produced many Beatles’ songs.
In previous attempts, Martin completely remixes the album. McCartney is pushed to the front, at the expense of others, and sometimes people describe these as bass heavy. Other things are ‘fixed’ and tracks have even been altered in the past, apparently.
The remixes sound bright and clear and modern. We have our original albums, and we don’t much like the remixes. They are not appropriate. They sound digital. The actual vinyl from the day, especially the mono pressings, still stands up. Yes, there are issues with some of the original stereo mixes, but mono was always the intended version to judge.
They are what they are.
It must be hard to find relevant out-takes and demos that are worth listening to that have not been heard before. The vaults have been raided so many times and the recent Anthology 4 showed there’s nothing great left.
Oh, there’s a new John Lennon demo, a noodling at the piano (we guess) with no words.
Will we buy it? Possibly. The book could be good, and we have the others, but we won’t get every version, that’s for sure.
Will there be any more SDEs? Some people have suggested not, that there’s little left in terms of extras or out-takes and that the earlier albums were generally recorded quickly and there’s very little specifically about them. We could see a film box, A Hard Day’s Night and Help! together, perhaps.
