TRON

So, there are some computer generated elements, but much of the film, especially at the start, is live action. In the computer world, it’s mostly black and white live action that was printed and sent to studios in the Far East for manual colouring and effects.

Lots of the film is hand drawn using traditional techniques. Some of it is quite cringeworthy.

The light cycle part and some other things are computer generated and look great.

Cindy Morgan is the love interest in both the real and computer world. She could have been made more overtly sexy. But it’s Disney.

Boxleitner as the TRON program is serious and worthy. Bridges as CLU is the comedy element.

It’s a very entertaining film, if you don’t think too much about the plot. You can enjoy Wendy Carlos’ electronic music and just get taken along with it all. It looks great.

If you can pick up the bluray, the commentary is very interesting. There were, apparently, odd flashes on the image that no-one could figure out. Eventually, they solved the problem just using a synchronised sound effect, as if action is happening elsewhere. In more recent versions, this has been corrected, and that is really sad.

Newly out on 4K and worth a look.
