The big red bus

Stopping a bus

Take a look at the stop on the previous page. The bus stop sign is white with a red roundel.

This means it is a compulsory stop. In theory, every bus on those routes will stop there even if no-one is getting on or off.

Here’s another:

This is red with a white roundel and is a request stop. The bus will only stop if you indicate you need it to (or, of course, if someone on the bus has indicated they want to get off).

However, when COVID came and lockdowns were happening, all bus stops got treated as request stops regardless, and this seems to have continued.

It is absolutely the best idea to treat every bus stop as a request stop. When you see the bus coming, when it’s not too far away, raise your left arm for a few seconds to attract the driver’s attention. Don’t step into the road, don’t do it if someone else has already done it and don’t leave it too late.

The bus may still not stop, if it is full, for example.
