The second man on the Moon

It is often said that Neil Armstrong was the first man on the Moon, and Buzz Aldrin the second. This is not true in a number of ways.

As far as landing on the Moon, Armstrong and Aldrin were in the same spacecraft and landed on the Moon together. It happens that Armstrong was the first to walk on the surface (he was nearer the door) and Aldrin the second, but as far as the landing was concerned, they were equal.

Aldrin’s name at that time was not “Buzz”. It was a nickname. He was born Edwin Eugene Aldrin Jr and he earned his nickname from his sister who could not pronounce “brother” properly. They landed on the Moon in 1969, and Aldrin legally changed his name to Buzz in the 1980s.
