Jim Lovell

The death was announced today of American astronaut Jim Lovell.

For those of us alive in the 1960s who were even vaguely interested in space exploration, there were two types of astronaut: famous and a part of history, eg John Glenn and Neil Armstrong and those not so well-known and slightly forgotten eg Gus Grissom and John Young.

Lovell was in the first category. He was a famous face and immediately recognisable.

Lovell was on the first Apollo craft to visit the Moon. It was during the apparently rather tentative steps NASA was taking to prepare for a landing. Apollo 8 flew at Xmas 1968. They left the Earth, covered the quarter of a million miles, went into orbit around the satellite, then came back to Earth.

They didn’t get eaten by the demons of the dark side of the Moon (ha ha) or get kidnapped by aliens. They did everything bar landing.

Lovell was eventually put onto Apollo 13 for a full landing. We know what happened to that. Many of us have seen the semi-fictional film of the same name, or we know actually what happened, but suffice to say, Lovell never set foot there. After this, he was always happy to talk about space and astronautics and his experiences.

In the film, he has a rather jarring cameo as the captain of the ship that rescues the crew.

Of the first 16 astronauts, all are now gone. A couple of the other oldsters are still alive, Charlie Duke and Buzz Aldrin, for example.

Piercing

I was talking to a friend the other day and the subject of piercings came up (as also did breast enhancements). I know a little about getting a piercing having had many myself. So here are a few random thoughts and questions people ask.

Will it hurt? Can you do it without a needle?

Look, someone is sticking a needle through your skin. It may hurt. It may not. It’s different for different people. If it does hurt, it will be a tiny fraction of a second.

No, you have to use a needle. If the piercer start bringing out a piercing gun, even for ears, leave immediately. Go to a professional place where they will use sterilised needles and all their years of skill and experience.

Can I do it myself? Can my friend do it with a sewing needle?

Sure you can. You may be lucky and have some success. Most probably, it won’t be done correctly, you could cause bleeding or other problems, you may get an infection or it could just look an absolute mess. You may be scarred for life.

Don’t. Just don’t. Find a local professional piercer, tell them what you would like, they will advise on suitability, jewellery etc, they will measure it up for you until it’s better than you could ever get it looking in a mirror and all, they will have sterilised equipment, it will be over in a flash, there will be aftercare advice and they probably won’t charge you a fortune (ask beforehand if it’s important).

How do I choose a piercer?

Look for someone local.

Look for someone with lots of experience, a studio that has been around for years.

Look for a piercing specialist, rather than some random assistant in the corner of a grocery store.

Word of mouth. Personal recommendation.

Not reviews.

Any even half-decent piercer will have a ‘proper’ website, or at least a professional looking on-line presence. Look at their portfolio. See something similar to what you want? Then you’re 90% of the way already.

Porn or no porn?

Apparently there are millions of people in the UK who look at porn on-line. I saw one report that said 14 million, and I have no idea how they came to that number or how to estimate it.

The government has decided that practical steps must be taken to prevent under age persons from viewing inappropriate material, and so porn and other sites that may feature such stuff need to provide a mechanism for people to verify their ages.

This is not just porn sites, but any site that shows adult material, so even Reddit, for example.

Failure for sites to check ages means a huge fine, or worse.

How do you prove your age? Well, you can use some kind of reference to a credit card or mobile phone account, have a live selfie taken that will be ‘assessed’, use some kind of digital identity system and other systems have been mentioned.

The assessment system needs to be pretty accurate and reliable, not because valid users could be banned but because under-aged people may beat the system.

Concerns have been raised. Why would you want to give your credit card details to some unknown system with no guarantee they won’t be misused, sold on or whatever?

How long would it take for determined surfers to bypass the system?

How easy will it be for someone to impersonate someone else?

I have an account with Reddit that includes piercing groups. I was asked to confirm my age and chose the selfie method. It took ages, but accepted me. That would be my limit, I think.
