There was a one off filmed special with Paul McGann, another serious actor, then a short series with Christopher Eccleston, also a good actor, as the whole series was relaunched after a 16 year gap (apart from the special).
This brought us David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, the latter especially with a serious acting track record.
The series for these three were particularly well loved.
Then there was a mis-step, using Jodie Whittaker and then David Tennant (briefly, again) and then Gatwa. So, who next?
