Some things that shock foreigners so much

Guns

Brits don’t carry guns.

Firearms are not a part of our culture. We don’t walk down the street wondering if you accidentally look at some-one the wrong way, will they shoot us in the head.

Schools don’t require pupils to go through metal detectors. Regular policemen do not carry guns. Some security staff at airports can carry rifles. In the 70 years I have been alive in the UK, I have never seen a gun on the street or, well anywhere.

It doesn’t mean that you can’t get arms of some kind if you have a real need for it, and presumably if you pass all the tests and vetting procedures. But you can’t just go on-line, order half a dozen guns and have them delivered by UPS, then go out and randomly shoot people.

We don’t pretend it is a God-given right to be armed. It is not the wild west.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t any physical crime. Sadly, there is but wouldn’t it be lovely if there weren’t?

And it’s much the same in so many countries of the civilised world. Sorry…

As a sobering statistic, in 2023 there were over 630 mass shootings (where four or more people were injured or killed) in the USA. This is not high for the USA, and is actually typical. 754 killed and 2443 injured.

In the UK there were 17, from 2010. So roughly 2 per day USA v 1 per year UK.
