TV magic

Nixon was succeeded by Paul Daniels, who had a huge prime time show on the BBC for years. Daniels rather lacked Nixon’s charm, or intelligence, and was not averse to making personal comments on the ladies helping him with his act. You can find plenty of examples on YouTube if you really want to look.

A friend of mine once saw a recording of one of his shows. They said Daniels had tried to do a trick four times and it had gone wrong each time. Somehow, they cobbled together a version for the show. You never see the bits that go wrong on TV.

Eventually, Daniels’ show went out of fashion and he was dropped.
