Perry Mason

Perry Mason is maybe more famous from the tv series that made Raymond Burr a household name.

The books are interesting. The first came out in 1933. the last 1969. Some were re-issued, a couple posthumous publications. What’s interesting is that nothing changes. Perry Mason is just the same, as is Della, Paul Drake. No-one is any older. Unlike Raymond Chandler’s great detective, who gets older in front of our eyes, Perry is ageless. At the end he has much the same beliefs as when he started. Female are judged on how they look, how much stocking they show when they cross their legs. Everyone smokes.

The stories can be weird. There are multiple plot holes. D A Burger never seems to get any cleverer, and Mason always gets away with some trick to get his client off.
