Hardcore

One is the legendary “Caligula”. It has a strong cast including Helen Mirren, Peter O’Toole, Sir John Gielgud and Malcolm McDowell. In fact, McDowell is credited as contributing to the screenplay.

At the back of it was Penthouse magazine owner Bob Guccione. Somewhere along the way, Gore Vidal was involved.

Guccione added the hard core scenes towards the end, and the full and uncut version is banned in some countries and is a cult classic. I don’t believe that any of the big stars did any sex scenes.

Another famous, maybe infamous film is “9 Songs”. This is directed by Michael Winterbottom and shows scenes from a relationship interspersed with music from a concert hall in Brixton.

Even at just 70 minutes, it drags and gets nowhere.

Just looking at my dvd shelves I see “Blue Is The Warmest Colour”. This is a French/Belgian/Spanish production about an affair between two females over a period of time.

There are some long and graphic sex scenes here.

I am sure other directors have too. I believe Gaspar NoƩ made a 3D hardcore film, though I have not seen it.

But is it porn or is it art? I don’t believe that any of these films has been hurt by the inclusion of explicit sex.
